Permeable Pavement Design and Life-Cycle Costing with David Hein

November 4, 2010

8:00 AM – 1:00 PM

Cost: $25.00

Storm water management is a key component of urban infrastructure design.  If properly designed and constructed, porous pavements can help rainwater infiltrate soil, decrease urban heating, replenish groundwater and reduce overall storm water runoff.  The construction of permeable pavement systems that can accommodate surface water runoff is gaining increasing attention through the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program.

In a 1999 storm water technology fact sheet on porous pavements, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) indicated that porous pavements traditionally have a failure rate of over 75 percent.  Failure was generally attributed to poor design, inadequate construction quality, improper treatment of the subgrade soils and overloading of under designed pavements.  Recent studies in the United States, United Kingdom and Australia have shown the significant benefits of permeable pavement designs.

David Hein is one of the leading authorities on segmental and permeable pavements in North America and is the Principal Engineer and Vice-President of Transportation with the Applied Research Associates,Inc. (ARA) Toronto, Ontario office. He is the manager of the ARA Infrastructure Management Division and responsible for the civilian and military airport pavement evaluation groups in Toronto, Ontario, Madison, Wisconsin, Gainesville, Florida and Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. He is responsible for pavement design, evaluation, value engineering and pavement and highway and airport infrastructure management.

Belgard Leads the Way for a Rebounding Industry

The Joint Center for Housing Studies, Harvard’s center for research on U.S. housing, released an article last week stating that a healthy rebound for remodeling is expected in 2010. According to the article, research suggests that annual spending will reach nearly a 5% growth rate in 2010.

Director of the JCHS, Nicolas P. Retsinas, stated, “The gradual recovery in the broader economy should encourage more remodeling spending by homeowners. This year could produce the first annual spending increase for the industry since 2006.”

Belgard has been preparing for this increase by boosting efforts on the national and local levels to raise awareness and improve education for both trade professionals and homeowners. Making educated decisions and providing quality service will increase loyalty and satisfaction for all of Belgard’s customers.

For the professionals, Belgard offers a series of certification classes and seminars through Belgard University. Established in 1995, Belgard University provides the latest tools, techniques and programs in the market today. Here are just a few of the advantages BU has to offer:

  • Receive new 2010 Belgard literature
  • Be the first to see our new 2010 product launches
  • Network with other trade professionals
  • Learn valuable tips your competitor is not
  • Earn ICPI and NCMA certification

This year’s curriculum also includes exclusive presentations from Belgard product partners including Chicago Brick Oven, Harmony Elements and Medium Rare.

In 2010, Belgard has also reached out to dealers and contractors through the Belgard Co-op Program. This program offers assistance in creating and executing advertising campaigns at the local level. Participants receive help in implementing plans that can raise overall brand awareness or create a buzz for specific events. Belgard has received great feedback in regards to the co-op program.

As a result of increased efforts to the trade, Belgard’s trade professionals are sharing their education with homeowners through local DIY clinics and workshops. Through these local events, homeowners have had the opportunity to watch live Chicago Brick Oven demonstrations (and enjoy wood-fired pizza), visit local product displays and learn hands on from trade professionals about the quality and versatility of Belgard products. A full listing of upcoming events can be found on the Outdoor Living by Belgard Facebook fan page.

As the market conditions become more favorable, Belgard will continue to empower professionals and homeowners alike by providing educational tools and hands-on experiences. Visit us at www.belgard.com to learn more about building your future through Belgard Hardscapes.

Belgard Presents: Belgard University

In today’s economy, staying ahead of the learning curve is absolutely essential to growing your business. Belgard has introduced Belgard University to offer trade professionals a unique opportunity to expand their hardscapes knowledge. Both new and existing Belgard customers can benefit from the basic and advanced levels of classroom and hands-on industry training provided at Belgard University. Our focused classes supply the resources needed to help grow your business.

Belgard is part of the international building company CRH, the second largest manufacturer and distributor of building products in the world. While Belgard has been a brand for Oldcastle APG since 1995, some of our European companies have manufactured pavers since the 1950s. In 2001 we created Belgard University as a forum for sharing our 50 years of industry knowledge with our valued trade professionals. Contractors, dealers and design professionals are all important to Belgard; we train more trade professionals about the hardscapes business than anyone in the industry. Due to the overwhelming success of last year’s classes, we will host over 40 Belgard University classes across the U.S. in 2010.

Belgard University provides the latest tools, techniques and programs in the market today. Here are just a few of the advantages BU has to offer:

The class had lots of real life application that has really helped out in the field. Sure is nice to know that a company is willing to invest in its contractors like Belgard does. Thanks for the opportunity.”  Join Tim and hundreds of other trade professionals that are staying ahead of the learning curve by taking advantage of the Belgard University program.
